Gene Therapy

This is a novel approach to the possible treatment of DeMyelinating disease. We do not know the exact trigger for MS but we do know that inflammation in the CNS is what it causes.

This inflammation involves those messengers, Cytokines, and these can be modified by the introduction of a different sort of Cytokines such as Transforming Growth Factor, and Interleukens 4 & 10.

The next problem faced by scientists is how to get these things across the BBB. For this, they use a Herpes Simplex Virus that cannot multiply but can cross into the CNS. Scientists have found in EAE that this approach both lessens the severity of the disease and delays its onset.
